Young people’s indifference to risk: An indication of social change?

The Risk Dialogue Foundation surveyed around 1,000 people from the German-speaking part of Switzerland as part of riskPULSE 2014. Three topics maintained the survey and it was examined how the Swiss population assesses its knowledge of opportunities and threats, how it perceives risks, how risk-averse it considers itself to be and how high the level of risk acceptance is. Furthermore, riskPULSE analysed which measures of dealing with risk are supported by the population and to whom they attribute responsibilities. The study also investigated the extent to which these elements of risk culture are related to demographic variables such as gender and age, as well as to the general, topic-independent willingness to take risks. Three age groups were distinguished: 18 to 34 year-olds, 35 to 49 year-olds and people aged 50 and over. Three topics were deliberately chosen in which the population is expected to have different levels of prior knowledge and which will become increasingly important in the future.
