Public Deliberation on Climate Risks and Negative Emissions – Possibilities and Limits of Participation

The dialogue on negative emissions or active CO2 removal from the atmosphere is an explosive topic in the climate crisis and brings with it many challenges. Controversial risks and an appropriate handling of these risks require comprehensive participation processes.

As an independent dialogue platform, our intention was to strengthen the debate on this important topic among relevant Swiss stakeholders, actors and the interested public in a fact-based manner, and thus to support broad-based decisions, especially on negative emission technologies in Switzerland. In our book chapter on public deliberation on climate risks and negative emissions, we look at the discussions and decision-making in our Science Dialogue and Stakeholder Dialogue on the topic and how the challenges that impact our society can be addressed.

The book chapter will be published in January 2020 in the book “Participation for everyone and everything? – Pitfalls, limits and opportunities” via Springer-Verlag. We will make our contribution available here after publication.
